Product Description

Announcing: Mary Legallet is our national needlepoint instructor for the 2022 Tulip Experience (April 12th – 15th 2022).

Let the natural beauty of the world-renowned Skagit Valley Tulip fields spark passion & creativity during this exclusive inspirational stitching excursion. This is the excuse you’ve been waiting for to visit us here in Washington State. Don’t delay, limited seats available.

From Mary Legallet:

I’ve done needlepoint since high school, but a visit to Needlepoint Inc in San Francisco in the mid-1990’s revealed decorative stitches and diverse thread choices that captured my imagination, and sparked a new, even deeper love for the craft. I then had the good fortune of learning under the tutelage of Beverly Churchfield, and the amazing late Wendy Harwood at Aristeia in Brentwood (now in Santa Monica).

Creating whimsical designs and cultivating a crisp, clean style all my own became not only a passion, but after a 25+ year career in advertising and corporate marketing, I chose to focus my life’s second chapter on needlepoint. I created whimsicalstitch.com to share the joy I find in every new needlepoint project, stitch technique, and even the threads I use.

I now enjoy travelling to stores across the country teaching workshops and embellishment events. My ongoing writing projects include the popular #whimsicalwednesday blog, where I share a free new stitch diagram (with stitched sample!) every Wednesday, along with the occasional #smallspacesunday and #stitchingsunday posts featuring small space stitches and past blog stitches in different projects (from a lot of my wonderfully talented students). I also write the Simply Stitches column in Needlepoint Now, featuring another cache of stitches.

I have a pile of unfinished projects in the basement, just like everyone else.  And I swear I’m going to finish them all someday, once I’m done stitching.

APRIL 12th – 15th, 2022

This four-day event includes:

  • Three days of instruction with the incredibly talented and creative Mary Legallet – author of Mary’s Whimsical Stitches Vol 1 & 2.
  • One day excursion to the Skagit Tulip fields during their annual tulip festival.

Class format:

“Mary’s Mini-Embellishment” – A more casual and spontaneous embellishment event. You will bring your own canvas and have lots of time with Mary to embellish your canvas. The Needlepointer is working with several vendors to acquire Tulip Themed canvases for you to choose from, if you prefer. Stay tuned!

Mary will provide input on stitches and thread selections for a minimum of 5 areas on your canvas – depending on the number of students and the size and complexity of the projects.

You will receive Stitch Notes for each of the students written by Mary. Stitch Notes include a summary of the stitches, diagrams, and thread direction from the event.

Historic Adventure

Around 1883, George Gibbs, an immigrant from England moved to Orcas Island WA, where he began to grow apples and hazelnuts. Nine years later, he purchased five dollars’ worth of flower bulbs to grow, and when he dug them up a couple years later and saw how they had multiplied, realized the potential for bulb-growing in the Puget Sound region. He then impressed the Dutch tulip farmers with his talent so much, that they shared their incredibly secret growing tactics. Today the 300 acres of tulip fields are visited by over 1 million each year.
